Phenomenon
The main character (John Travolta) observes a strange light on his birthday at a bar. During the following days he becomes super-intelligent and puts his knowledge to good use in the community. When word gets around he becomes known as a "freak" and everyone wants to figure out why this happened to a car mechanic. Note the ways death and grieving are portrayed in the film. (1996)

El Dia de Los Muertos
This 21-minute documentary portrays the revival of "The Day of the Dead" celebration among the Mexican-American community of San Antonio, Texas. Great film for comparing different attitudes toward death and dying. Available with teacher's guide through the Institute of Texan Cultures.(1991)

Shadowlands
Tells the story of C.S. Lewis' romantic relationship with Joy Gresham, an American fan who wins his heart and then discovers she is terminally ill. (1989)

Cocoon
Offers insight into perspectives on aging and dying in contemporary society. A group of older adults discovers "the fountain of youth" in a Florida swimming pool. They must choose between remaining with family and friends on earth - and dying... or leaving earth on an alien spaceship with the prospect of living for millennia. (1985)
